Gerald A. Hoogmoed (Jerry) of Pawleys Island passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of August 9th, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving family including Naomi (Ogden) Hoogmoed, his wife of 63 years, his son Gerald A. Hoogmoed, Jr. of Warwick, NY, and his daughter Jane Karen Leach of Pawleys Island, SC. His youngest son, Timothy Walter Hoogmoed, predeceased him in 2013.
Jerry was born July 19, 1935 in Passaic, NJ, the son of the late Cornelius Walter and Stella Josephine Maziarsky Hoogmoed. He lived much of his life in Clifton and West Milford, New Jersey.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean conflict between 1954 and 1960, during which time he was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, and at the White Sands Proving Grounds in Las Cruces, NM.
Following his service to his country, he had a long career as a Teamster, and drove eighteen-wheeler tanker trucks throughout the northeast. Upon retirement to Lady Lake, FL in 1985, he had a second career working for the Florida Highway Department.
Over the years he really enjoyed gospel music, RV camping, golfing with his grandsons, friends and neighbors, and fishing – especially with his late son Tim.
Jerry and Naomi relocated to Heritage Plantation in Pawleys Island in 2010, where they have been active members of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife, son and daughter, Jerry is survived by six grandchildren; Jeremy Leach, Corey Leach, and Amanda Powley of Pawleys Island, SC; Matthew Leach of Simsbury, CT; and Jaime and Jacob Hoogmoed of Warwick, NY, and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Martin of Toms River, NJ, and was predeceased by brothers John, Neil and Robert Hoogmoed.
A memorial service will be held at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, August 15th at 2:00 PM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please offer a donation in Jerry’s name to The Joy School, at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church, 9967 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.
Burroughs Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Murrells Inlet (843.651.1440) is assisting the family.

Naomi, Jane, Ken and family. I am so sad to read this. I'm so glad I got to visit last year and spend some time with the family. Prayers for all of you at this time for comfort and strength as you face the next few weeks. I wish I could come down for the funeral but it is impossible at this time. Sending my love to all.
