Charles Edward King



Charles Edward King, age 95, passed away peacefully Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Grand Strand Regional Hospital.

Born of American Parents, Finley & Minerva King, in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, Mr. King became a citizen of the United States at birth. He was raised and attended school in Lubec, Maine and also attended Boston University.

Mr. King served in the US Navy as a corpsman during World War II where he received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a bronze star. He also received a commendation for “Courage and Devotion to Duty” during the battle and securing of the island of Okinawa. Honorably discharged at the end of the war in 1945, Mr. King was recalled back to active duty during the Korean War in 1952. He was assigned aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, receiving an honorable discharge in 1955.

Mr. King had a career in sales and retired as Vice President and National Sales Manager after 30 years of service with the Collier Keyworth Co. a division of Legget & Platt, manufacturer of components for the office furniture industry with facilities in Gardner, MA and Liberty, NC.

He was a member of Litchfield Country Club and Past President of the Men’s League, volunteer at Waccamaw Community Hospital, a member of the First Baptist Church Georgetown and a Master Mason for over 55 years

Mr. King is predeceased by his loving wife Rebecca King.

He is survived by his daughters, Gloria (John) Zander , Jacksonville, FL; Brenda (Jerry) Pope, Georgetown, SC; son, Reginald (Sandy) King, Myrtle Beach, SC; 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great granddaughters and 1 great great grandson.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, April 7, 2018 at First Baptist Church Georgetown. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mr. King’s name to the First Baptist Church Georgetown Building Fund, 219 Cleland Street, Georgetown, SC 29440.
