William Arthur Hanson, Sr., 94, of Murrells Inlet, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 with his family by his side. He was born May 6, 1927 in Minot, ND, a son of the late William Oli Hanson and Ella Sophia Hanson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Irene Hanson ; daughter Holly Grace Hanson, brother Robert Hanson, and sister Evelyn.
He is survived by 5 children ; William A. Hanson Jr (Murrells Inlet, SC), Kathleen M. Hanson (Annapolis, MD), Diana J. Dalakis and husband Sotirios (Greece) David N. Hanson and wife Roberta (Glen Burnie, MD), Mark A. Hanson ( Murrells Inlet, SC) ; and sister Adeline Sprattler (Fargo, ND) ; and 10 grandchildren.
William proudly served our country in the US Army Air Corps. He attended North Dakota State University where he met his wife Irene, joined the engineering fraternity Sigma Phi Delta, and received his BSME. His love of aviation drew him to a position with Westinghouse in the defense industry. He worked over 35 years in Kansas City, MO and Baltimore, MD. Upon retirement, his love of golf drew him to his Murrells Inlet home.
William volunteered for many diverse activities during his lifetime to spend time with his children. These included Soap Box Derby, AAU diving, coaching baseball, and working on cars. He enjoyed motorcycles, golfing, College basketball, and a good banana cream pie. He will be forever in our hearts and memory.
A Celebration of William’s life will be held on Wednesday January 26, 2022 at 10:00AM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 542 Cypress Ave. Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. For those unable to attend, the service will be live streamed via the church website, http://www.saintmichaelsc.net/
