Steven O'Shields Obituary

Steven Kent O’Shields, 67, of Surfside Beach, SC, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the loving husband of Karen Sellers O’Shields (Kay) and a son of Frances Eleanor O’Shields and the late James Arthur O’Shields.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Alex O’Shields (Lynn) and Brian O’Shields (Averie), both of Easley; step-daughter, Stacy Browder (Jonathan) and step-sons, Scott Patterson (Shay), Will Lovern (Lyndsey) and Grayson Lovern (Natalie).  He was blessed with four sisters, Cathy Stephens of Pickens, Tracy McDaniel (Bob) of Easley, Stephanie Rampey of Liberty and Alison Gantt (Chuck) of Pickens; and a brother, Wayne O’Shields (Judi) of Liberty.  He was also lovingly known as Papa Kent to five precious girls and four precious boys.  In addition to his father, Kent was predeceased by a 4 year old brother, Paul O’Shields.

He spent his early years in the Wren community before the family moved to Liberty.  He was valedictorian of his graduating class and loved his USC Gamecocks.

Kent spent many years with Westinghouse and Isola Laminates before embarking on a career in granite fabrication. Kent had an eye for detail that earned him the highest praise for his work.  He was meticulous to a fault and would “Ponder” and Eye-ball” a task long before making the first move.

He had a deep love for southern gospel music and enjoyed singing in the family quartet for most of his life.  He was well known for his rich, deep bass voice.

Kent loved his family, enjoying 70’s music concerts with Kay, building things with his hands – he had just finished a complete remodel of their home near the ocean.  He was also an avid bowler and could practically run the categories on Jeopardy.  A man of few words but many actions, he possessed a bone-dry sense of humor to match his dry wit and keen intelligence.

He was saved at an early age and loved his Lord. His daily prayer began with “Thank you, Lord, for another day”. We have no doubt he is rejoicing in the presence of Jesus and reunited with his dad and brother.

Kent is also survived by his four-legged best friends, Dexter and Dolly. He spent many hours with his friends at the local dog park solving all the world’s problems.

There will be two memorial services to celebrate Kent’s life.

The first service will be held Sunday June 12, 2022 at Calumet Baptist Church, 400 S. Peachtree St., Liberty, SC  29657.  The family will receive friends at the church at 2:00 PM with the service immediately following at 3:00 PM.

The second service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday June 18, 2022 at Church of the Resurrection, 8901 US Highway 17 Bypass South, Surfside Beach, SC  29575.

Memorial donations can be made in Kent’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org  or to the ASPCA at aspca.org/honor

There are not enough words to express how much Kent was loved and how deeply he will be missed.
