Roy Houston Obituary

In the ninth inning of a beautifully played game, Roy Houston rounded third and headed for home. In the game of life, he left it all on the field. A resident of Murrells Inlet, Roy passed away after a brief illness on May 17, 2026.

Roy was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 16, 1934. As a youth, he loved all sports, but especially the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers and remained a lifelong, diehard fan. After high school graduation, Roy was drafted in the Army. While stationed in Erlangen, Germany, he met the love of his life, Alice Holdridge, who was supporting the Army in the Special Services. They were married in Germany in March of 1959.

Upon his return, Roy began his over 30-year career with the Chrysler Corporation while completing his bachelor’s degree at Wayne State University. His role at Chrysler began as an entry-level finance clerk and ended as an executive in Fleet Sales.

Shortly after retirement, Roy, with Alice by his side, started a new career helping others. For the next 23 years, they delivered food from local grocery stores, five days a week, to Baldwin Center in Pontiac, Michigan. The food was used for their community soup kitchen. Family was the epicenter of Roy’s life. He especially loved traveling with his son, Paul, to special sporting events around the country. He and Alice were also integrally involved with their three grandchildren, attending youth sporting events on weekends and planning family trips to MLB parks and historic sites in the summer.

Roy is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Joyce Ifkovits, and her husband, Kevin; grandson Connor Ifkovits and his wife, Katy; grandson Ethan Ifkovits; granddaughter, Alex Ifkovits, and fiancé Cameron Brandt; and great granddaughter, Nora.  He is preceded in death by his son, Paul.
