Robert W. Farmer, 96, of Pawleys Island, SC, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital. He was born February 14, 1927 in Newark, NJ, son of the late J. Farmer and Hazel Taylor Farmer.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Cisko Farmer; daughter Linda Farmer Johnson; and brother, Jack Farmer.
He is survived by his wife of Pawleys Island, SC, Gertrude “Trudy” Farmer; one daughter, Diane Matthews and her husband, Jerry of Murrells Inlet, SC; step-daughter, Shelley Baughman and her husband, Dale of Conway, SC; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Robert proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He went on to be the Chief Engineer for Orange Roller Bearing Company and the Beriless Bearing Company both of NJ for forty-five years. He has three patents in the Bearing Industry. He started square dance calling where he called for over fifty years with the Farmer Boys Band. After retirement he was a volunteer for Patient Care Ambulance Service, also volunteering for the DAV and VA transporting cancer patients back and forth to treatments. He also volunteered with Neighbor to Neighbor in Pawleys Island. Robert donated over 16 gallons of blood in his lifetime.
He loved traveling with his wife throughout the US and Europe. Above all he loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was a member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. Service times will be announced once arrangements are finalized.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made in Robert’s name to Tidelands Community Hospice,2591 N. Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440 or to a charity of one’s choice.
