In Loving Memory of Rives Ward Kelley
Rives Ward Kelley, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Pawleys Island on December 20, 2025, at the age of 98.
Born in Charleston to Bentley and Maude Ward, Rives carried the grace and hospitality of the Lowcountry throughout her long and beautiful life. She was a woman of intellect and craft—an accomplished journalist with a sharp mind, a talented seamstress, and a legendary cook whose home was always open to those she loved.
Rives’ greatest joy was her family. She was the heart of her home, dedicating her life to nurturing her children and grandchildren. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome and special, leaving a legacy of warmth and kindness that will be deeply missed.
She is reunited in peace with her husband, Thomas Ray Kelley Jr., and her brother, Bentley Douglas Ward Jr.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her son, Stephen (Kate) Kelley; her daughters, Karen (Larry) Hartley and Jenifer Lachicotte; six grandchildren, Brandon, Matt, Jon, Nick, Phil, and Bentley; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to honor Rives’ life and 98 years of memories will follow at a later date.
