Richard Hughes Griffith
December 23, 1943 ~ December 4, 2023 (age 79) 79 Years Old
Be the first to offer your condolences on Richard's Tribute Wall
Richard Hughes Griffith (Rick), 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 4, 2023, in Murrells Inlet, SC. Born December 23, 1943, in Washington, DC, Rick was the son of the late Robert Hughes Griffith and Edna Williams Griffith. He is survived by his loving wife Kimberly, his son Ricky Fenstomocher (Cindy), his grandchildren Kaitlyn Hall (Cody), Cole Fenstomocher and Cooper Fenstomocher; his great grandchildren Dalton and Blakely Hall; his brother Ronnie Robin Griffith (Helga); many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his Miniature Schnauzer, Ziggy.
Throughout his youth, Rick spent summers in NC working on a relative’s farm harvesting and hanging tobacco. After graduating from Bladensburg High School in 1961, Rick enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving three years as an aircraft engine mechanic. Upon his honorable discharge, he began a career as a calculator salesman and eventually, in the 1980s, started his own company selling and servicing copiers, called Office Equipment Services, located in Lanham, MD. He retired in 2017 at age 73.
Rick had many interests and adventures in a life well lived. He loved a good suit and a great pair of shoes. He had quite the collection of cowboy hats and boots. He loved to travel with friends, attend happy hours and spend weekends on the Potomac River on his speedboats. He loved putting the top down on his Cadillac XLR and cruising. He was an expert skier and skied the mountains of Austria every January until he was in his early 70s. He enjoyed the occasional round of golf. He was an “extra” in three motion pictures (Head of State, Syriana, and State of Play). He owned and operated the Skipjack waterfront restaurant located in Deale, MD, for a short time. And, he supported his wife’s hobby of collecting souvenir spoons from the early 1900s, hunting for spoons from Austria and forming his own collection of plique-à-jour.
Rick was a born salesman who loved to meet people. No one was a stranger for long. He had a generous soul and was always willing to share his many talents or any resources he had. He could fix literally anything, and if he couldn’t, he knew someone who could. He had a strong faith and enjoyed attending services and events at his church. He loved his family, friends and neighbors with his entire heart.
Rick truly believed that life’s journey was not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, "Holy moly, what a ride!"
