Richard Albert Cabaniss, age 77, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 6, 2021 at his home in Murrells Inlet after a courageous, three year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Shelby, NC, Mr. Cabaniss was the son of the late Everette Clarence Cabaniss and Eleanor “Betty” Cabaniss. An avid reader of historical novels, Mr. Cabaniss loved computers, “piddling” with anything, hiking at Grandfather Mountain and all animals, especially dogs. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his son Thomas Richard Cabaniss.
He served proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Once he returned home, he worked for WICA Chemical Company before beginning a 41 year career with Eastern Airlines/EDS as a computer programmer. He was a devoted husband, father, “granddude” and friend.
Survivors include his loving wife, Catherine “Kitty” Giblin Cabaniss; son, John Michael Cabaniss (Cathy), Moncks Corner, SC; daughter, Meghan Cabaniss (Rebecca Shaheen), Seaside, CA; brothers, Steve Cabaniss (Judy Stone) and Kenny Cabaniss (Lori); sister, Sandra Thomason; one granddaughter Carlin Rose Cabaniss, to whom he is her “Dude”; along with many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Burroughs Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the funeral home.
