Peter Barbera Obituary

Peter Joseph Barbera, 88, of Murrells Inlet, SC (formerly Massapequa Park, NY), passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, March 30, 2026 at Veteran Village in Florence, SC.

Loving father to two daughters, Therese Barbera and Susan Barbera-Maggio (James), Peter was the beloved “Poppa” to his four grandchildren: Taylor Ciraulo, Christian Maggio (Madelyne), Peter Maggio and Nicholas Maggio. Brother to Dominick Barbera (Pat) and brother-in-law to Cathy Ingrilli, Peter was blessed with many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Peter is predeceased by his loving wife of more than 54 years, Dorothy “Dot” Scherer-Barbera; his parents, Carmela and Fortunato Barbera; mother- and father-in-law, Lillian and Lawrence Scherer; sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Joseph Allard; brother Frank Barbera; brother- and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Doris Scherer; and brother-in-law, Carl Ingrilli.

Peter was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, before moving his family to Long Island and retiring in Myrtle Beach, SC.  He was known for his love of cooking, cruise ship vacations and card games including blackjack, poker and pinochle. In his younger years Peter was an avid mini-Indy race car driver and possessed a tool for every need. He most recently enjoyed building guitars, watching baseball, listening to big band music and being with those he loved.

A very special thanks to all at Veteran Village for more than three years of care for Peter, and for its special “honor walk” to pay tribute to him as a U.S. Army veteran with honorable discharge.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made either to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org (please indicate Peter Barbera as the Honoree name) or Veteran Village by mailing a check to: Veteran Village, 1200 E. National Cemetery Road, Florence, SC 29506  (please note in Memory of Peter Barbera).
