Moira Elizabeth Dilks died abruptly and unexpectedly on September 10, 2023, in her home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Moira was born on July 15, 1992, accompanied by her lifetime best friend and “womb mate,” Emily, to her mother, Susan Anderson and father, Julien Dilks. Moira, an honor student, graduated from Monticello High School where she played varsity field hockey and basketball. She earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, establishing a green program for recycling at the Albemarle County Fair. Moira graduated from Virginia Tech with a BS degree in Mathematics and considered herself a lifetime “Hokie.” In 2022 Moira graduated with a DDS degree from the University of Tennessee, achieving her lifetime goal of becoming a dentist. She worked as a pediatric: dentist at Oceanside Dental in Myrtle Beach, focusing on children with special needs.
Moira circumnavigated the world on Semester at Sea during her sophomore year, a voyage and adventure which was life changing, establishing values and goals by which Moira lived her life. Moira cherished family and close friendships. She loved the majesty of the ocean and the calm which the sea provides. She valued justice and appreciated the diversity of cultures and the dignity and importance of each and every individual in our wonderful world.
Moira leaves behind her mother, Susan Anderson and her partner, Bob McCarty, her sister and best friend, Emily Booth and her husband, Barry, and her brother, Jonathan Shotwell and his wife, Corinne. She also leaves nieces Lauren Shotwell and Sophia Nash and nephews Barrett and Bentley Booth. She leaves paternal grandparents, Ken and Colette Dilks and maternal grandmother, Mary Anderson. She leaves a number of cousins and devoted friends, especially Nolan, Hannah and Andrea, Moira also leaves her beloved fur baby, Fiona Mae, who comforted her at the time of her death.
A celebration of Moira’s life is planned for late December, 2023, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
