Mitchell Palmer Lichtenberg, 88 of Pawleys Island, SC, passed away quietly on Sunday, March 1st, 2026, in a local hospital. All services will be private.
Mr. Lichtenberg was born as the son of the late David August Lichtenberg and Mary Dixon Palmer Lichtenberg in New Rochelle, NY on August 16, 1937. He was the grandson of former US Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer.
His career centered on education, first as a high school history teacher in Monmouth, N.J., he then joined the Curriculum Development Center at Carnegie Institute of Technology. He became Associate Director of Education Computing Systems, authoring audio-visual kits for the Holt Social Studies Curriculum. He later served as the Social Studies Director of the Franklin (Mass.) Public School System. Mitch ended his professional career working for Ginn & Company, first as editor of its magazine Opt and then as Program Manager in their Social Sciences Division and finally IT manager. After retiring to Mount Pleasant, S.C., Mitch returned to teaching by offering robotics classes to junior high students in the area. Later in Pawleys Island, he continued to enrich others through his art.
He achieved a bachelor’s degree in history at Swarthmore College '59, M.A.T at Harvard University '60, and a PhD at Carnegie Mellon '72. He also served in the Army Reserve during the 1960's.
His wife, Patricia, having predeceased him, Mitch is survived by his two sons, Mitchell Jr. and Christopher, his sister Louise L. Coffin, and his two grandchildren, Zack Lichtenberg and Ali Lichtenberg.
