Mary Jim VonSlep Obituary

Mary Jim Starr VonSlep passed away peacefully at her home in Murrells Inlet, SC on September 20, 2022 with her loving family by her side. Mary Jim is the only child of the late Emerson Lindsey Starr and Jettie Mary Susan Pollard. She was predeceased by her husband, Willliam Henry III and daughter, Susan Starr VonSlep.

Mary is survived by her two sons, William Henry IV (Lisa Aglietti) and Robert Emerson (Phyllis). She leaves a legacy of love and wonderful memories to her nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.  She was a devoted Christian who served the Lord through acts and prayer. She waited in joyful anticipation to meet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and for her reunion with Bill and Susan. While she is dearly missed, there is no doubt that she is in Heaven, rejoicing.

Mary & Bill were married in 1959 and spent several years living in Anna Maria Island, FL before relocating to their farm in Hickory Knoll, NC. After Bill’s passing, Mary came to Murrells Inlet, SC to live with her children. She was a devoted wife and mother, serving as executive secretary to Slep Electronics. In addition to her duties at the office, she spent many years working alongside her husband and children to operate Slep Orchard Farms, the largest apple orchard in Macon Co. NC. Mary Jim served as a Red Cross nurse and as an active volunteer in her community and church.

Mary was an avid reader, card player, and gardener. She and Bill shared a passion for tending to their flower and vegetable gardens while living in FL and NC. She missed this after Bill passed and would often reminisce about the time they spent together and the different varieties of vegetables they grew.  Mary especially enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She cooked mostly from memory, but was always looking for a new recipe to add her special touches to. Sunday supper of traditional southern foods with a coconut cake for dessert was a treat for all who gathered at her table where she would entertain us with stories of her childhood and raising her family.

A private graveside service to honor Mary and lay her to rest will be held at Belin Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, September 24, 2022.  In keeping with Mary’s lifelong love of her family pets, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Saint Francis Animal Shelter in Georgetown, SC or a local animal shelter of choice in memory of Mary Jim Starr VonSlep.
