Mary Ellen (Johnson) Norbe

Mary Ellen Norbe, 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 27th, 2021 at the Duke University Medical Center surrounded by family. She was born on January 14, 1944 in Paterson, NJ to Richard & Marion Johnson.

Mary Ellen Norbe was raised in Northern NJ and attended Hawthorne High School and after graduating worked as an Artist. She went on to raise a family after meeting her husband Roy on the Garden State Parkway when in-route to the Jersey shore.

Mary Ellen and Roy raised their two children, Todd and Tracy, in North Haledon, NJ. Mary Ellen enjoyed cooking, painting, reading, and gardening and was always ready for a nice glass of wine.  Mary Ellen was an amazing cook and baker and when at her home, there was never a shortage of great food consumed by family and friends. As the kids grew older she started a sign business with a friend that allowed her to display her amazing artist skills. Once the kids were on their own, Mary Ellen attended College and was hired as a Culinary Arts Teacher at Passaic County Vocational School. Of all her work… she always expressed that her most rewarding job and the one she loved beyond anything else was raising her children and looking after the Grandchildren. She was the heart of our family.

Mary Ellen was a loving and caring wife, mother and friend who always thought about the welfare of others before herself. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion and always made sure that she took the time to send a card with a meaningful, caring note.

Upon retirement, Mary Ellen and Roy moved to Murrells Inlet, SC to enjoy the better weather. They quickly acclimated… and the local gym was one of Mary Ellen’s favorite spots to catch up with friends. Many enjoyed her homemade Lemoncello recipe. Mary Ellen and Roy were soulmates, inseparable, displaying for all what true love and marriage should be. An amazing life together through 57 years of marriage. Mary Ellen and Roy loved to travel with friends and family and spent many memorable trips in Italy.

She is survived by her husband Roy; son Todd Norbe and daughter Tracy Hyder; granddaughters; Ashlyn Slania, Courtney Norbe, Chloe Hyder and Morgan Norbe; grandsons; Gavin Norbe and Austin Hyder; Great grandsons; Cruze Norbe and Hudson Slania.

A Memorial Service Mass will be celebrated on Thursday July 1, 2021 at 10:00AM at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 542 Cypress Avenue, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
