Martha Balasch Obituary

Martha Balash, 89, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born on May 15, 1936, in Berglangenbach, Germany, to Hugo and Katherina Jungblut. Martha was one of nine children and grew up in a close-knit family alongside her siblings Willy, Elizabeth, Hans, Gertrude, Maria, Gerlinde, Edda, and Alicia. She often spoke fondly of her childhood—working on the family farm, walking and singing through the nearby forests with her sisters, moments that shaped her lifelong loves of nature and song.

Music was a deep passion in Martha’s life. She pursued opera studies in the city, where her love of singing flourished. It was during this time that she met Wayne Davidson, a U.S. Army sergeant stationed in Germany during the Korean War. The two married, and at just 19 years old, Martha began a new chapter in the United States.

Together, they raised four children: Ron, Wayne, Gerlinde, and Bert. Martha built a life in California, where she devoted herself to her family and home. She cherished time spent singing and she sang for many years with the Frohsinn German Women’s Choir in California.

Later in life, she remarried Albin Balasch in the 1990s, and the couple settled in Eureka, California, where they shared many years together until Albin’s passing in 2006.

Martha continued her journey with resilience and grace, relocating to the Chicago area in 2007 and later to South Carolina in 2016 to be closer to her children.

She found joy in life’s simple and meaningful pleasures—being outdoors, surrounded by nature, singing, coloring in the later years, and she cherished time spent caring for others when they needed help.

Martha is survived by her children, Ronald, Wayne, Gerlinde, and Bert Davidson; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Gerlinde, Edda, and Alicia.

She will be remembered for her strength, her warmth and kindness, her love of music and nature, and the deep love she had for her children.
