Marietta Wilson Obituary

Marietta Dunn Wilson, 79, loving mother and dear friend, died peacefully Monday night, February 15, 2021 at her North Litchfield Beach, SC home surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 22, 1941 in Tarboro, NC, Marietta was the daughter of the late Sam Arrington Dunn and Musette Kitchen Dunn.

She is survived by her three sons, Harold Wilson, Jr. and wife, Anna of Monroe, NC; Sam of North Litchfield Beach, SC; and William and wife, Anne of Boone, NC.  She has 6 grandchildren:  Ashley, Ryan, Megan, Jack, Lilly, and Annabella.  She is also survived by her sister, Musette Steck of Durham, NC, and her nieces and nephew.

Marietta was raised in Enfield, NC, where she spent her days as a child playing outside with her friends.  She was trusting and innocent from a very young age.  So much so that she spent hours in the field on a summer afternoon waiting with a bag to catch the “snipe” that her friends told her would be coming.  Dusk came, along with her daddy, who got her and told her that one day, she would catch her “snipe” and then he took her home.

Marietta spent many years in Charlotte, NC married to Harold Wilson, the father of her three children.  There she spent countless hours serving as president of the PTA, driving to early morning swim practices and numerous swim meets, playing Bridge, being an active member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, and being with friends and family.  A dedicated member of Mountainbrook Swim & Racquet Club, she was a tennis champion who played daily.  Marietta had a true passion for the sport that continued literally to the day she died.  If there was a tennis match on the TV she was sure to be watching it.

North Litchfield Beach finally became Marietta’s home in the early 2000’s.  It is here, where she continued to nurture old friendships and create new ones.  A competitive lady, she was the owner of millions of Bridge cards that got put to good use as playing Bridge was one of her favorite ways to spend time with friends and talk, talk, talk.  Marietta loved her “Bettin’ Belles” and somehow managed to win the prize a majority of the time.  She was the “neighborhood watch” for her Ancient Mariner neighbors and she always looked forward to having her family here for the annual July 4th golf cart parade and neighborhood cookout.

It was also at North Litchfield Beach where she became a member of her beloved Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.  Her church was her extended family, whom she loved so dearly.  She got great joy out of singing in the choir and filled her heart to the very end by devoting her time to the Stephen Ministry.  She was a child of God, who believed deeply in helping others through His word.  The Stephen Ministry was a very large part of her life.  Always dependable, she was there to help anyone who needed it.

God, family, and friends were what made up the foundation on which Marietta built her life.  She was a southern lady with deep southern roots.  Manners and etiquette were some of her specialties and she was always ready and willing to share a “helpful hint” about what was appropriate and what was not.  She always had her homemade pickles at the ready to share for any occasion.  If you called her up or came by, you knew she had the stocks pulled up on her computer and a tennis match on the TV, but she was always ready to talk!  Her joyous laugh and distinct voice could be picked out in a crowd.  “Miss Etta” will be missed by all who knew and loved her.  One thing is for certain...she has gone home!  We love you and miss you, “Miss Etta”!

An outdoor memorial service to celebrate Marietta's life will be held at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, February 24 at 2:00 PM.
