Marcia Hudson Massey

Marcia Hudson Massey, 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at National Healthcare of Garden City, South Carolina. She was born on November 13, 1940 in Bessemer City, North Carolina to the late Jacob Talmadge Hudson & Valaree Darby Hudson Dellinger.

Along with her parents, Marcia is reunited in passing with her husband, James S. Massey; two sisters, Joyce Summer & Allene Robinson; and one brother, Billy Hudson.

Marcia earned her Associates Degree from Montreat-Anderson College (now Montreat College) and Bachelor of Arts from Erskine College. She went on to become the Director of Christian Education within the Presbyterian Church. Her gift and passion were in working with young people, so many of whom remained in touch with her across decades, whether they were members of church youth groups or Girl Scout troops she led, or the teen mothers she mentored through Family Outreach of Horry County. Even though they are now in their 60s and 70s, she still referred to members of the youth group at First Presbyterian Church in Belmont, North Carolina as her “young people.”

Marcia’s dedication to her community was reflected in the time and energy she invested in various organizations, including those mentioned above. She served as a Girl Scout leader for the then Pee Dee Council for close to 20 years, even after her daughters graduated from high school. She thrilled in taking her troops on high adventure outings, like white water rafting and hang gliding, and in helping girls earn their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. She helped co-found Family Outreach of Horry County and was a charter member of P.E.O Sisterhood, Chapter S, Myrtle Beach, an organization she was proud of and had been a part of since 1986. Ever the director of Christian education, Marcia led retreats and Bible studies, most recently the Frances Wilson Circle at Belin Methodist Church, exploring biblical history and interpretation and seeking to understand not only Christianity but other faiths, as well.

Marcia spent hours reading, having co-founded a book club in 1978 that still meets regularly. A history major, she was a member of the Archibald Rutledge Club, a local club founded in 1948 that meets monthly and whose members lead programs and discussions of an historical nature. Above all else, Marcia loved spending time with family and friends, sharing much love and laughter. She will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish Marcia’s memory are her adoring daughters, Elaine Loyack and her husband, John of Cary, NC and Catherine E. Massey of Murrells Inlet, SC; and grandchildren, Olivia Loyack and Charles Loyack.

A celebration of Marcia’s life will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Belin United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. The family will gather to greet friends following the service at Inlet Affairs, 4024 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, and a graveside service will be held at 3:00PM at Belin UMC Cemetery.
