John Richard Joye, 92, of Garden City, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital. He was born December 31, 1932, in Hemingway, SC, son of the late, Ernest McLaurin Joye and Mary Johnson Joye.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Richard Scott Joye, and all his brothers and sisters, Louise Wood, Hazel Rodgers, Will Joye, Homer Joye. E.M. Joye, Jr., Douglas Joye, and W.L. Joye.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Scott Joye of Murrells Inlet, SC; two grandchildren, John Carlton Joye of Murrells Inlet, SC and Leigh Anne Joye of Houston, TX; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Johnny graduated from Hemingway High School in 1953 and joined the United States Army in June 1953. He served in Germany and Austria during the Korean War as a Corporal in the Military Police. He continued to serve until 1955, when he joined the United States Army Reserves where he served until 1961. After serving in the military, he began his career at the Hemingway Livestock Market where he was an Auctioneer. He also owned and operated Farmer’s Grain in Hemingway and Pamplico: was a Manager for Cairo Pickle Company based in Hemingway for many years: worked with the Hemingway Tobacco Market; and owned several real estate and business properties in Murrells Inlet and New Bern, NC. He was truly and Entrepreneur and worked in several different industries throughout his life.
Johnny was known for his loving care for his wife and extended family. During his career, he offered many youth job opportunities. He was a host for the annual Garden City Flounder Tournament for many years and could often be seen boating along his beloved inlet checking his crab traps.
He was a member of Belin United Methodist Church where a celebration of his life will be held at 11:00am on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Belin United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. A reception will follow in the Belin Family Life Center.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made in Johnny’s name to Belin United Methodist Church.
