                                                                John M. Burling Obituary

John M. Burling, Myrtle Beach, SC died April 30, 2020. He was born in Jamestown, NY on July 30, 1933, son of Gust A. Burling and Violet Myers Burling. He graduated from Jamestown High School and Purdue University, where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a Mason and member of various professional and social organizations., and active coaching his children in youth sports.

A veteran of the U. S. Army where he served in Alaska, he worked for Marlin Rockwell in Jamestown as a Time Study Engineer and Supervisor and at IBM in various locations as an Industrial Engineer, System Analyst, Plant Materials Manager and Divisional Marketing Systems Manager.  While at IBM, he had four technical articles published on simulation modeling.

After early retirement from IBM at age 53, he pursued many hobbies: boating, gardening, furniture making, traveling and writing. He and his wife, Joanne, also were involved with genealogy, which led them to numerous travels in the U.S. and Europe, including a huge family reunion in Sweden in 2000, with their four children.

He was active in seven churches, primarily in stewardship and leadership roles on church councils, and studied Biblical Prophesy as a hobby. In 2015 he had a book published on the subject called “One Day Closer”.

By the grace of God, he was a two-time cancer survivor in 2002 and 2004.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joanne Sederholm, whom he married November 21, 1959. He is survived by his four children: Kathryn Germond of Fishervile, KY, Debra Wagner of Summerville, SC, John Burling II of Charlotte, NC and Randall Burling of Coral Springs, Fl. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Nicole Wirth, Alec Germond, Matthew Germond,  Christopher Wagner and Patrik Burling and five great children: Merritt Germond, Cody Wirth, Bowen Germond, Brooks Germond and  Liam Wirth.

The memorial service will be held at a future date in Myrtle Beach. Memorials may be made to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center,
