Joan Dean Obituary

Joan Kathleen (Moore) Dean of Murrells Inlet passed away at her daughter’s home in Summerville, SC with family by her side on May 14, 2026.

Joan leaves behind her loving children and their respective families:  Son – Timothy Dean of Houston, TX – Daughter-in-law Shirley Dean and grandchildren Jacob, Juliana, and Joshua Dean; Daughter – Mary Dean of Murrells Inlet, SC; Son – Patrick  Dean of Cherryville, NC – Daughter-in-Law Kathleen Dean and granddaughter Kaitlin Ray (spouse Patrick Ray), great grandchildren Brody and Olivia Ray, and grandson Matthew Patrick Dean; Daughter – Sara McKee of Summerville, SC – Son-in-Law Bryant McKee and grandchildren Hannah and Nathan McKee; Son – Matthew Dean of Oviedo, FL – Daughter-in-Law Carol Dean and grandchildren Grace, Samuel, Thomas, Charles, and Ann Dean; Son – Joseph Dean of Houston, TX – Daughter-in-Law Sara Dean and grandchildren Allison and  Emily Dean; Son – David Dean of Anderson, SC – Daughter-in-Law Sarah Dean and grandchildren Tobias and Edith Dean.  She also leaves behind four of her siblings:  Sister – Judith Kelley of Standpoint, Idaho; Brother – Dr. Cecil Moore and Sister-in-Law Gerri Moore of Columbia, MO; Brother – Dr. David Moore and Sister-in-Law Brenda Moore of Kirksville, Mo; and Sister – Patricia Moore of Kirksville, MO.

Joan is preceded in death by her loving Husband of 57 years, John T. Dean.  Also, her Parents Hazel and Cecil Moore; Sister Mary Conyers; Brother-in-Law Skip Conyers; Sister Barbara Johnson; and Brother-in-Law Joseph Kelley.  

Joan was born in Kirksville, MO on August 10, 1943.  She graduated college from Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, MO with a bachelor’s degree in what was then called Home Economics Education.  She and John raised their family in rural Kansas, moving to the East Coast in 2004.

Joan was multi-talented and worked primarily as a mother and homemaker of her family.  She did work outside of the home for many years as well, as both a substitute and full-time Home Economics teacher within the Perry Lecompton and Lawrence School Districts.  She enjoyed cooking, sewing, making quilts, performing various duties at the local church, and going to the beach.  Joan’s family was her greatest joy, and she loved spending as much time with them as possible.

Services will be held on June 30th @ 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Murrells Inlet, SC.  The memorial mass will be live streamed and can be viewed 10 minutes prior to the start of the service by visiting www.saintmichaelsc.net.

Memorial donations may be made in Joan’s name to St. Michael Catholic Church, 542 Cypress Ave., Murrells Inlet, SC  29576.
