Jean Masterson Obituary

Jean Masterson, of Surfside Beach, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh, of over 50 years and her beloved dog Dixie.

Born and raised in Chelsea, England, “Mean Jean” met and married Hugh, an American working in London, in 1963. Together they raised five children, living all over the world, including Scotland, Spain, Italy, England and Portugal before “crossing the pond” and moving to the United States (New Jersey - culture shock #1) and then ultimately settling in Surfside Beach in the early 80’s (culture shock #2).

Ever the bargain hunter, she could not resist a flea market or garage sale. She only ever drank tea, and it better be HOT. She loved animals, especially dogs, and her “encounters” with squirrels were legendary. She adored babies and toddlers serenading them with Hello, Dolly! whenever she could. In her later years, Alzheimer’s stole her memory, although she never forgot three things; she was a mom, she was British and of course, Sean’s phone number.

She is survived by her children, Kim, Nancy, Sean, Kelly, and Megan, twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Rest in peace, mom. You’re finally going home.

A private family gathering will be held in her honor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local animal shelter.  The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Inlet Coastal Resort for their loving care over the past decade, and to Tideland’s Hospice for their kindness in her final years.
