James "Jim" L. Thompson, Jr.

James L. “Jim” Thompson, Jr., 89, of Murrells Inlet, SC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at NHC in Garden City. He was born December 21, 1935, in Charlotte, NC, son of the late James L. Thompson, Sr. and Mervin Murriel Murphy Thompson.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one grandson, Spencer Thompson; and two sisters, Faye Lemmond and Mary Lee Thompson.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Joanne Thompson of Murrells Inlet, SC; two sons, Gary Thompson and Greg Thompson both of Murrells Inlet, SC; three brothers, Edward Thompson and his wife, Amy of Johns Island, SC, Stephen Thompson and his wife, Karen of Charlotte, NC, and Johnny Thompson and his wife, Carol of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Nell Hartgrove and her husband, Danny of Charlotte, NC and Diane Keistlar of Charlotte, NC; two granddaughters, Tara Thompson and Taylor Thompson; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins & extended family members.

When younger, Jim was a devoted Boy Scout, and he enjoyed playing softball. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High School and later attended Western Carolina University.  He loved spending time on the computer, playing golf, reading books, collecting coins and stamps from around the world, and above all spending time with his family.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held 3:00 PM August 10, 2025 at Mulberry Presbyterian Church, 5600 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC  28028, with interment following at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Hill, 15000 York Road, Charlotte, NC 28278.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made in Jim’s name to the Surfside Presbyterian Church PCA, 8732 US Highway 17 Bypass South, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588.
