James Smith Obituary

James “Jim” Bernard Smith, 81, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and went to reside in his heavenly home. He was born December 10, 1944, in Washington, DC, son of the late, Bernard H. Smith and Margaret Clatterbuck Smith.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Carol Ramon.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sandra “Sandy” Bradford Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Darryl Smith and his wife, Christie of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Michelle Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Virginia Stark and her husband, Dickie of Nokesville, VA;  and Bev Crisp and her husband, Frank of Beverly Hills, FL; and four grandchildren, Bethany, Christopher, Caleb, and Alayna.

Jim attended two years at Maryland University and went on and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and later dedicated his career to the United States Government as a computer programmer. He was married to the love of his life for 59 wonderful years just one month shy of 60 years. The two of them built a family grounded in commitment, loyalty, and love. Jim led by example by serving the Lord. He was a youth group leader for many years, and served in other various areas at our church. He had a natural gift for tinkering and fixing things,  he could almost always find a way to make it work again.  He will be remembered for his service, strong faith in God,  sharp mind, quick wit and a great sense of humor, that could always make us laugh.  He was a big Redskin fan despite his son being a big Cowboys fan. He was the best husband, dad, brother, Jim Jim, Grandpa Jim and friend. He will be missed by all.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 6:00pm Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Market Common Community Church, 803 Howard Ave, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577. The family will gather for fellowship and to greet friends, after the service and with light refreshments.
