Herbert William Mitchell (Dr. William Mitchell), passed away December 30, 2022, at home surrounded by loving family. A longtime resident of Richmond Hill, he has lived with his son and daughter-in-law in Wachesaw Farms the past six months.
Born March 28, 1932, in Birmingham, Alabama, William (Billy) Mitchell served two years in the army immediately after high school graduation. Subsequently, he attended Birmingham Southern GC College and ultimately received his doctorate at the University of Alabama. His passion was in the education field where he was named Outstanding Young Educator in the State of Alabama in 1967. He served in a variety of academic positions including coach, teacher, principal, assistant professor, and school superintendent.
He founded the non-profit Power of Positive Students International Foundation, which served thousands of schools nationally and abroad, in building positive attitudes and life skills. He was the author of four books and a highly requested speaker at schools, national educational associations, and Fortune 500 companies. He was applauded for his work by such notables as Paul Harvey, Bob Hope and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, often traveling with the latter.
He was an avid sports enthusiast, from his days as a Golden Gloves boxer in the army, to his passion for tennis. He especially loved Alabama football (Roll Tide, dad).
He is preceded in death by his first love, wife, and mother of his two sons, Carolyn (Rainey) Mitchell. They were married for 43 years and will be reunited in Belin Methodist Church Cemetery. He also was preceded in death by his second wife, Mary Mitchell of Edgefield; and Carol (C.J.) Mitchell of Travelers Rest, with whom he was married for the past 11 years.
Surviving are his two sons: William Denson Mitchell, of Mount Pleasant, SC; Michael Alan Mitchell and his wife Janey Mitchell, of Murrells Inlet, SC; their children, Michelle Mitchell of Chicago; Matthew Mitchell and wife Cynthia (Hair) Mitchell of Pawleys Island and their daughter, dad's great granddaughter, Amelia (Millie) Mitchell.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday January 7, 2023 at Belin United Methodist Church Cemetery in Murrells Inlet.
