Helene Sorrentino (née Best), 77, a woman who truly lit up every room she entered, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, surrounded by her greatest accomplishment—her children. Born and raised in Nutley, New Jersey, and later raising her family in Belleville, New Jersey, Helene moved through life with a vibrant spirit and unmistakable presence that earned her the affectionate title of “social butterfly” among all who knew her. She was deeply devoted to her children, grandchildren, and cherished friends, and her love for them was unwavering.
Helene lived life entirely on her own terms: fiercely independent, delightfully resilient, and full of conviction. Once she made up her mind, there was no changing it. This strength became one of her greatest gifts as she aged. No matter the challenge or how difficult the road became, Helene kept fighting. She kept going. And she never lost her sparky wit and sense of humor.
Once her children were grown, Helene settled into the warm and welcoming community of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina — but slowing down was simply never her style. She poured her energy into the Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge #2797, the Surfside Beach Moose Lodge #2351, and the American Legion Auxiliary #178. A woman of faith, she was also a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
Helene found joy in the simple, social pleasures of life. She loved cruising the neighborhood in her golf cart to visit friends, playing music bingo, and bringing people together. An avid traveler, Helene especially loved cruising and treasured trips to Alaska, Hawaii, England, France, St. Maarten, and Aruba. A remarkably talented seamstress, she created clothing, curtains, pillows, and countless impressive Halloween costumes. Her creativity extended to wreaths and holiday décor, filling her home—and others’—with warmth and celebration. If there was a reason to gather, Helene would be the first to organize it, arrive with a perfect appetizer, and finish it off with one of her delicious desserts. When a new infomercial appeared on TV, everyone knew exactly who to call—Helene was proudly the “Queen of Gadgets”. If you needed company, an ear to listen, or a reason to laugh, Helene was always one you could count on. Her bright smile is unmistakable. Her infectious laugh is unforgettable. Within minutes, Helene made everyone feel like family. She will be deeply missed.
Helene was predeceased by her parents and her beloved fiancé, Robert “Bob” Sullivan. Her legacy of love, laughter, and strength will live on through her family: her twin sons, Duane and Darin (his fiancée, Glenda); her twin daughters, Lora and Lynn (her husband, Kenny); and her five adored grandchildren, Tommy, Zack, Kacey, Lena, and Jared. She leaves behind her lifelong friend and "sister" of almost 50 years, Geri Hanson (husband, Russ), daughter Tara (husband, Peter), their children, and grandchildren, and many other supportive friends and neighbors.
Helene’s warmth, independence, and vibrant spirit live on through the family she loved so fiercely and the many lives she touched. Her presence will be felt in every gathering, every laugh, and every cherished memory.
Rest in peace, Queen Helene.
We love you, always.
