Harry Bennett, III Obituary

Harry Gilmore Bennett, III, 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday March 12, 2024 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. He was born on September 27, 1936 in Washington, DC to the late Harry G. Bennett, Jr. & Ruth Eileen Burrows Bennett.

Along with his parents, Harry is reunited with his cousin- who was more like a brother, Mr. Phillip “Flip” Taylor.

Harry proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. Following his honorable discharge, he went on to work for Verizon Telephone Company for many years. Upon Harry’s well-deserved retirement, he was able to enjoy the finer things in life. While in DC, Harry was a member of the Redskin Chorus in the 1960’s. Harry had a passion for antique cars and was the proud owner of an Antique Model A. Harry spent countless hours working on his car and many hours tinkering with his countless other projects. He was a proud member of several antique car clubs between Washington DC & South Carolina. Above all else, Harry loved his family with his whole heart. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his quick wit, bright smile and the love he had for his family.

Left to cherish Harry’s memory are his adoring wife of over 65 years, Nan Bennett of Murrells Inlet; their son, Rick Bennett and his husband, Mike Hirsch of Mesa, AZ; as well as many cousins; an extended family and many supportive friends and neighbors.

A Celebration of Harry’s life will be held on Wednesday March 20, 2024 at 1:00PM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 542 Cypress Ave. Garden City, SC 29576. Inurnment within the church columbarium will immediately follow mass.
