It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria F. Hahn, age 95, of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, in the morning hours of January 16, 2026, following a period of declining health.
Gloria was born in the Bronx, New York, on July 6,1930, to the late Alice (Dalmar) Chambers and Harry R. Chambers. She graduated from Evander Childs High School in 1948. Gloria worked as a secretary at W.E. Hutton in New York City where she met her future husband, George. They were married on November 26, 1955 at St. Cecilia Church, Englewood, NJ.
Gloria and George began their married life in the Bronx, shortly afterwards moving to the suburbs of New Jersey, where they raised their three children. While primarily a devoted homemaker, Gloria was deeply involved in her community. She served as a Brownie leader, Den Mother and volunteered her time serving meals to the homeless. For many years, Gloria was an active and devoted member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Metuchen, New Jersey, where she served on the Altar Guild and participated in numerous church committees.
In 1989, Gloria and George retired to the Myrtle Beach area, a place she held special meaning for her as she had vacationed there with her parents since the 1940s. Gloria loved to reminisce about how rural and untouched the area once was. She loved the beach, from swimming in the warm ocean waters, taking long walks along the white sand, searching for shark’s teeth and collecting shells. There was truly no place she would rather be.
Gloria’s greatest joy was gardening. She could often be found tending to her flowers and shrubs, caring for her gardens with pride and dedication. Her passion for gardening led her to Brookgreen Gardens in Murrell’s Inlet, where she volunteered in the Visitors Center for thirty years. This love of gardening was passed on to all three of her children.
Gloria was the queen of word puzzles and Sudoku. Even in her final days, she could solve Wheel of Fortune puzzles faster than anyone in the room. Her quick wit, gracious spirit, and warm presence endeared her to all who knew her. She leaves a void in the hearts of her family that words cannot express.
Gloria was preceded in death by her dear sister, Beverly Schmidt (Paul).
Gloria is survived by her devoted husband of seventy years, George Hahn; her loving children, Kathleen Tavel (Michael) of Landover Hills, MD, Karen Harmon (James) of Frenchtown, NJ, and George Hahn (Cynthia) of Paramus, NJ. She is also survived by her seven cherished grandchildren: Jennifer Hampton (Steven), Lt. Col Amanda Braasch US Army (Lt. Col Ronald Braasch US Army), Emily DeFusco (Daniel), Cody Harmon, Rebecca Harmon, Erin Hahn and Megan Hahn.
Gloria was a proud great-grandmother to nine great-grandchildren: Madelynn, Samantha, and Owen Hampton; Ronnie, Cannon, and Flynn Braasch; Bridget, Michael, and Olivia DeFusco.
Gloria also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including her niece Diane, who shared a particularly close bond with her. She is additionally survived by her special neighbors, Richard Wilson and David Lee; Leo and Donna Hill and Betty Pringle whose constant presence, kindness, and care made them part of the Hahn family.
Services will be held at 1 pm on Friday, January 30, 2026, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, 17 Oak Avenue, Metuchen, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in Gloria’s name may be made to Brookgreen Gardens or a charity of your choice.
