Geraldine Howie Obituary

Our hearts are filled with sadness that we have to say goodbye to our beloved Geraldine (Jeri) Howie as she went ahead of us to Heaven on November 23, 2022, to dwell in the house of the Lord. Jeri was a doting wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to so many. Her infectious smile and beautiful blue eyes would light up any room.

Jeri was born as a twin to Max Daniel Heffner and Alice McCoy Heffner in Gastonia, North Carolina.

She is a graduate of Gastonia High School and Evans Business College. After a long career in accounting starting in Washington, DC, she retired from a division of Sara Lee in High Point, North Carolina. After her retirement, she and her husband relocated to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to be closer to their daughter and her family. They quickly became a part of the community and their church. Jeri was a faithful member of Garden City Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class and was a church greeter. She was a past PTA president and served on various boards and social committees in Links Brook and their church.

She enjoyed hosting and entertaining, and her home was always open. She loved decorating her home, playing in card groups, shopping, and spending time with family.

Survivors include her loving & devoted husband of 66 years, Carl W. Howie, Murrells Inlet, SC; Carla Howie-Loveless – and son in law, Alan J. Loveless; Pawleys Island, SC; granddaughter, Lauren T. Loveless; Charleston, SC; niece, Amanda Sherrill, Covington, GA; Rick Heffner, Stanley, NC; niece, Phyllis Harris, Mt. Holly, NC; nephew, Dean McGinnis of Belmont, NC; and her beloved kitty, Angel.

Jeri is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Donna Mechane Howie, her parents, Max and Alice Heffner, her twin brother, Dean Heffner, her brothers, Marion Heffner, Brevard Heffner, Cloughn Heffner, and her sisters, Alice McGinnis, Lavania Ratchford and Melba Morrow.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Garden City Baptist Church in Garden City, SC. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A private interment will be held at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia, NC.

The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Jeri’s private caregiver, Hazel Sargent; and to Traditions Health and Amedisys Health for the care and love given to Jeri and her family.

Those wishing may make memorial donations in Jeri’s name to Children's Home Society of North Carolina, P.O. Box 14608 Greensboro, NC 27415 or online at www.chsnc.org/donate/
