George Hosfield Obituary

Dr. George Louis Hosfield, age 87, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and formerly of Okemos, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 12, 2026.

Born on August 30, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, George was the son of the late William and Louise Hosfield. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and went on to dedicate his life to education, scientific research, and serving others.

George devoted nearly 40 years to Michigan State University as a distinguished research Geneticist with the United States Department of Agriculture. During his remarkable career, he earned a patent for a new variety of red bean, which he aptly named "Merlot." He was honored as a Fellow of the American Horticultural Society in recognition of his lifetime contributions to horticultural research, teaching, and extension. Throughout his career, George received numerous awards for his research and community service while mentoring countless graduate students from around the world, many of whom he regarded as family.

Of all his many accomplishments, George considered his greatest blessings to be his loving marriage of more than 60 years to his wife, Marie, and raising their two sons.

A man of deep faith, George was actively involved in the Catholic Church throughout his life. He found joy in reading, gardening, thoughtful conversation, attending his weekly prayer group, and, above all, spending treasured time with his grandchildren. His kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Marie (Woodall) Hosfield; his sons, Sean (Kristel) Hosfield and Vincent Hosfield; his cherished grandchildren, Serena, Isaac, Julian, Cora, and Bryson; his brothers, Michael (Daryl), Peter (Mary Jane), and David (Dale); his sister, Gretchen; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday July 17, 2026, at 10am at St. Michael Catholic Church 542 Cypress Ave Murrells Inlet, SC 29576

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Hospice Organization at Waccamaw Hospital in Murrells Inlet.

George's legacy of faith, scholarship, mentorship, and unwavering devotion to his family will continue to inspire all whose lives he touched. He will be remembered with great love, gratitude, and admiration.
