Gene Preston Tomlin, 72, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 14, 1953, in Frederick, Maryland where he resided and raised his children. Gene lived a life defined by hard work, adventure, and deep love for his family.
Gene was the son of Glenda Covell Gibbs. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Clifford Gibbs.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 40 years Elizabeth Tomlin; his son, Garrick Tomlin and wife, Molly, of Mooresville, NC; his daughters, Jessica Tomlin of FL and Lindsay Dawson and her husband, Dennis, of Frederick, MD; his sister, Penny Gibbs of WV; and his beloved grandson, Brooks Dawson, who brought him immense joy. Gene also leaves behind special cousins, Neada Minnick and Nick Minnick, as well as his longtime boss and friend, Tony Offutt. He also held a special place in his heart for their "adopted daughter" Milena Mendes of Mongolia.
Gene worked for 40 plus years with Dittmar Construction Company, where he spent most of his career as a construction supervisor. He was a member and former president of the Frederick Ski Club and was also a member of the Coast of Carolina Parrot Head Club (COFCPHC).
Gene enjoyed an active life and loved traveling, water skiing, snow skiing, camping, bowling, jet skiing, and motorcycle riding specifically Harleys. He especially cherished spending time with his grandson and taking him to the beach. His love of live music is what led to him choosing the Grand Strand area for his retirement home. He made friends wherever he went and was always ready to lend a hand to his friends and neighbors.
In honor of Gene, memorial contributions may be made by donating to PanCAN.org for pancreatic cancer research or by donating to Children's Recovery Center.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
