Eugene Thomas Ubaldi, or Gene, to all those that knew and loved him, was born in New York City to Mary and Eugene Ubaldi on June 29, 1944. Gene spent his early years in Manhattan before moving to Rhode Island and California, eventually settling down in Staten Island where he graduated from New Dorp High School. Gene married the love of his life, Mary, in 1985 and together they raised their family in Glen Head and Sea Cliff, Long Island. Gene spent most of his career proudly working in the airline industry for Eastern Airlines and Northwest Airlines, the former of which is where he and Mary met. Working in the airline industry enabled him to pursue his love of travel, which was infectious to those around him and lasted his whole life. He ended his career at Brinks, the armored car and security company, where one of his proudest moments was handling security for soccer’s greatest prize, the FIFA World Cup trophy. Anyone who saw the photo of Gene holding that trophy knew what a moment that was for such a die-hard sports fan. There really was no bigger sports fan than Gene. Whether cheering on his favorite NY sports teams (Rangers, Giants, Yankees) or hearing about the games his grandkids were playing, sports were one of his top lifelong passions. His grandchildren didn’t have a bigger superfan than their Grandpa. Soccer, softball, skiing, lacrosse, more soccer, and gymnastics – Gene loved sharing in all of their sporting triumphs. In 2011, Gene and Mary moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, where they explored new places, met great friends and relaxed during their retirement – which included many great memories and travel adventures that enabled Gene to continue his lifelong love of travel. Together with their many new Seasons’ community friends, Gene and Mary travelled to Alaska, South America, Europe, the Caribbean and a number of National Parks. Gene loved people’s company, interesting conversation and a glass of red wine. His humor and infectious laugh brought a smile to everyone’s face and he will be deeply missed by all those who loved him.
Gene died on May 25, 2022 at home with his wife by his side. He was predeceased by his father, Eugene Thomas Ubaldi, and his mother and stepfather, Mary and Dick Scudera, his stepson Jason Sheehy, and his cousin John Ryan, who grew up with him and was like a brother.
