Elmo "Joe" Leger Obituary

Elmo Joseph “Joe” Leger, Jr., 76, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Monday November 16, 2020 at his home in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. He was born on July 17, 1944 in San Diego, California to the late Elmo J. Leger, Sr., & Emily Verna (Schmiedeberg) Stout.

Along with his parents, Joe is reunited in death with his sister, Luanna Poche.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a skilled solider and achieved the rank of Major. While enlisted, Joe earned 3 Bronze Stars, a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts, among many other awards and accolades.  Following his honorable discharge, Joe went on to assist the Maryland Army National Guard. Joe was truly a hardworking man with a heart of gold. Upon his separation from the Gaurd, Joe had a successful career in system analysis for many years. Following Joe’s well-deserved retirement, he was able to enjoy the finer things in life. Joe found peace on the golf course, enjoyed playing poker with his friends, landscaping and gardening and relished tinkering with his many projects around the house. Above all else, Joe loved his family with his whole heart. He will be deeply missed but remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and love for his friends and family.

Left to cherish Joe’s memory are his beloved wife of over 12 years, Darlene “Susie” A. Jones of Pawleys Island; his children, Joe Leger and his fiancé, Sherrie Blankenship of MD & Chris Leger and his wife, Kris Rideout of CA; grandchildren, Sam Leger, Sequoia Leger & Calder Rideout-Leger; brother, Larry Leger of LA; sister, Luverne Asmuth of NC; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins; a large, loving extended family and many supportive friends and neighbors.

A Graveside Service in Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. The date and time will be announced when finalized.

At the request of the family, please consider memorial contributions in lieu of flowers. Donations in Joe’s name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 1990 Fordham Drive, Suite 100, Fayetteville, NC 28304 or to Tidelands Hospice, Black River Rd. Georgetown, SC 29440.
