Edwina Ann (Barbery) Evans

Edwina Ann Barbery Evans, 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 29, 2023 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She was born on January 19, 1951 at Logan General Hospital in Logan, West Virginia to the late Edwin C. Barbery & Hattie W. White Barbery.

Along with her parents, Edwina is reunited in passing with her brothers, Edwin Barbery, Jr.  & Paul S. Barbery. 

Edwina graduated from Logan High School in 1968 and graduated from Marshall University with a degree in Education. Her passion for guidance led her to become a skilled and dedicated teacher for many years. Edwina had an eye for beauty and a knack for helping those in need. Her caring and accepting demeanor made her a beacon of trust and support among her students. Her love for her students did not stop with fundraising and just being present- Edwina gladly gave up her free time and many weekends decorating for school functions such as prom, graduation and holiday parties. During her time as a teacher, Edwina assisted her English Dept with their annual Shakespeare Festival, by preparing the roast pig and decorating with time appropriate trimmings. Edwina thought nothing of going above and beyond for those she truly saw potential in. Whether it be as simple as after school tutoring, or as big as going to ask a local judge for leniency for one of her students, Edwina was ready to do what she must. When Edwina wasn’t expanding her academic family, she could be found spending time with her own. In her free time, Edwina relished making memories with friends and family. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.

Left to cherish Edwina’s memory are her adoring sister, Mayme Dewey and her husband, Bob of Murrells Inlet, SC- with whom she made her home; her ‘special’ nephew, Steven David Barbery of New York, Barcelona, and PA; students that had kept up with her over the years, Tonya Williamson, Justin McAllister, Freddie "Puff" Adkins and Mark Maynard; and many supportive friends, neighbors, past students, and especially, Lynda Mendez & Linda Ball.

A Celebration of Edwina’s life will be held on Friday February 3, 2023 at 1:00PM at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. The family will gather to greet friends from 12:00PM until the time of service.
