Edward George Pfeifer

Edward was born in the Bronx, New York, to Anna Divo and Edward VanRiel. When his parents divorced, he was adopted by Ernest Pfeifer.

Ed spent his early childhood in Clausen Point, NY, attending Holy Cross Elementary School before his family eventually moved to upstate New York. Growing up, he was an energetic and spirited young man, playing on the Varsity Football and Wrestling teams. From an early age, people knew Ed as a friendly, happy soul who instinctively offered help to anyone in need. If you came to him with a problem, he was ready with a listening ear, encouragement, or a bit of advice.

Ed continued his education at what is now SUNY Brockport, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, followed by a Master’s Degree in Administration at SUNY New Paltz. Teaching was more than just a career for Ed; it was his calling. Over the course of 33 years in Kingston, NY, and in other districts, he touched countless lives. He coached football, soccer, golf, and swimming, and was especially beloved for the way he guided teenagers both in and out of the pool. They nicknamed him the “Pool Psychologist,” a testament to the trust and comfort he inspired. He firmly believed everyone should know how to swim and became a certified Water Safety Instructor Trainer with the Red Cross, training many others who would carry on his mission.

In college, Ed met the love of his life, Arlene. Their story was filled with serendipity—both were born in the same Bronx hospital, Parkchester, but didn’t realize it until they met years later. Their marriage was a true partnership built on love, laughter, and adventure. Together, they camped their way across the country, eventually “upgrading” from tents to an Airstream Travel Trailer. With Arlene by his side, Ed found joy in travel, community service with the Jaycees, and a life full of activity and friendship.

Sports remained a central joy in Ed’s life. He played racquetball, practiced Judo, swam, and even took on the challenge of a Triathlon. But golf was his lifelong passion. He played and worked at courses for years, his favorite being the time he spent traveling and working at the World Tour golf course.

Later in life, Ed and Arlene made their home in Seasons at Prince Creek, where Ed often marveled at how fortunate he was to live in such a welcoming and beautiful community.

Above all, Ed’s greatest joy was his family. He adored his daughter, Kelly, and her husband, Ryan, and he was proud of his grandson, Davis. His love for them was boundless and evident to everyone around him.

Ed is survived by his sister, Carol Ann Desai, and by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Barbara and James Cooke, Donna and Jerry Gorelick, and Carol and Jack O’Hara. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his brother, John.

Ed’s legacy is one of kindness, encouragement, and joy. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but for the warmth he carried into every room, the wisdom he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

A Celebration of Ed's Life will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday December 11, 2025 at Burroughs Funeral Home in Murrells Inlet, SC.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the time of service from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM.
