Dalton Buford Floyd, Jr., 86, passed away after a long illness on Monday April 14, 2025, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, SC.
He was born May 4, 1938, in Lake City, SC, to the late Dalton B. Floyd, Sr. and Reba Clowney Floyd. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, mentor, community and statewide leader. His love for the practice of law led to a 62 year career in the legal profession.
Dalton graduated undergraduate and Law School from the University of South Carolina, Cum Laude in 1963. From there he entered the United States Air Force as a Captain in the Air Force’s Judge Advocate General Corps. He was stationed in Ankara, Turkey.
Upon returning home to the United States, he began his illustrious career as an attorney. He became a community and statewide leader earning numerous awards and accolades throughout his life. Some of the most meaningful awards included, starting 3 Banking Institutions, was a lecturer for the PGA of America, Carolina’s Section, he was awarded The Order of The Palmetto by Governor Mark Sanford in 2005 for his contribution and service to the State of South Carolina, he was a former Chairman of the S.C. Higher Education Commission, a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Charleston Law School, a Trustee of the board of Winthrop University, Coastal Carolina University and a Life Trustee of Brookgreen Gardens. Dalton was awarded the John S. Rainey Philanthropy Award by The Huntington Society of Brookgreen Gardens in 2022. In his later years his favorite activity was being a member of the Belin Memorial United Methodist Church Choir. He loved the music, the people and the camaraderie.
Dalton’s deep love of education and animals led to the development of the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program at Coastal Carolina University, the Domestic Animal Exhibit at Brookgreen Gardens in honor of his parents and Nova’s Garden, a pet cemetery located on the property of Belin Memorial UMC.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of over 50 years, Linda Floyd of Murrells Inlet, SC; sons, Dalton (Lacy) Floyd III, Brad (Dianne) Floyd and Blake (Shayda) Floyd all of Murrells Inlet, SC; daughter, Terry Norwood of Annandale, VA; grandchildren, Anna Norwood, Samuel Norwood and Mya Floyd; sister, Betty (Doug) Stone of Lake City, SC; special brothers-in-law, Doug Stone, Cliffe (Jude) Barrineau and Ira Barrineau; special nephews and nieces, Justin Stone, Patrick (Bri) Barrineau, Chaz Barrineau, Natalie (Carlos) Argueta, Gracie Barrineau; special housekeeper, Essie Tucker, his cherished Golden Retriever, Enzo and numerous cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Dalton’s Life will be held on Friday April 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC. The service will be live streamed and can be viewed by visiting www.belinumc.org. Visitation will be immediately after the service in the Belin Memorial UMC Family Life Center. Burial will be private.

After one year of service, mentors may apply for a scholarship and receive professional references.
