Cornelius "Neal" Bert Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Cornelius “Neal” Myers Bert announce his sudden and unexpected departure from this life on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Conway Medical Center near his home of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. His immediate family stood by his side voicing their love for him at his passage into the arms of his Savior, grateful to God that their beloved husband and father seems never to have suffered and rejoicing that they could all be together in that moment.

Neal was preceded in death by three brothers: John, Sam, and Joel Bert, and is survived by six other brothers and seven sisters.

Neal was born August 23, 1945, in Newburg, PA, the son of John S. and Lela Myers Bert. Neal grew up on his parents’ farm, the 7th of 17 siblings, going on to receive two degrees in mathematics at Shippensburg State College. He met his future wife Pamela when he was fourteen and she was just eleven. They married in August of 1967 and enjoyed fifty-five years together, initially in Shippensburg PA, moving in 1977 to Plano TX, and followed their dream in retirement to the South Carolina coast in March 2022.

In addition to his immediate family members Pam, Trina Mays and her husband Jeffrey of Austin TX, and Trevor Bert and his wife Amy of Sunnyvale TX, Neal was blessed with six grandchildren: Zachary and his wife Lily, Hannah and her husband Will, Nathaniel, Joel, Tanner, Chase, and one great-granddaughter, Charlie. He was a kind and supportive father and an affectionate and doting grandfather.

Neal was renowned for his enthusiastic dedication to numerous charities and outreach ministries such as Help4Kids, Samaritan Inn, Feed the City, Minnie’s Kitchen, City House, and Douglass Community Center. He served at his church and energetically promoted democratic causes and candidates in North Texas.

He was also a lifelong educator teaching in public schools in the Dallas area and helping in afterschool study programs and in other volunteer roles.

Finally, Neal is remembered for his unconditional love and acceptance of others, his outgoingness and friendship, his service to whatever community he lived in, his cheerfulness, reserving his reproach only for those who failed to love and accept others as the Lord loves us.

A memorial celebration of Neal’s life will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Low Country Community Church, 4430 Murrells Inlet Road, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

Neal experienced cardiac arrest doing what he loved. He was volunteering for Help4Kids and delivering food to children in the community. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations be made in Cornelius’ name to Help4Kids Backpack Buddies, 2523 Forestbrook Road, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588 or at https://www.help4kidssc.org/donate.html
