Carol Strickland Hughes, lovingly known as “Sissy,” passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, at the age of 80 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Born on December 6, 1945, in Queens, New York, Sissy was the cherished daughter of the late Charles Gennings Strickland and Agnes Mary Winters. Sissy was also preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son, Joseph Wayne Gordon, Jr.
Originally from Queens, New York, early on- in her teenage years, Sissy made her home in Murrells Inlet, where she was known for her love of family, fishing, and her lifelong admiration for Elvis Presley. She was a faithful member of Christ Church in Murrells Inlet and found great joy in her church family and community.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory, including her husband, Roger D. Hughes; her daughter, Pattie Gordon; brothers, Charlie Strickland, III (Maria), John Strickland, Sr., & Bobby Strickland, Sr. (Jan) who was like a sister to her. She is also survived by and known as “Grammy” by her grandchildren, Taylor Cabanaw, Renae Nance (DJ), Lauren Johnson, and Brittany Gordon (Hannah); nine great-grandchildren; as well as an army of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sissy will be remembered for her warmth, devotion to her family, strong faith, and the joy she found in simple pleasures. Her love, laughter, and caring spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grand Strand Humane Society.
A celebration of Sissy’s life will be announced by the family at a later date.
