Carol Ann Lusby passed away peacefully at home in Pawleys Island, South Carolina on September 10, 2023 at the age of 79, from a diagnosis she refused to let interfere with living life fully each and every day. She would probably be embarrassed by this brief tribute, because she never enjoyed being the center of attention. She preferred to let those around her shine. However, her faith and love for her family and friends was the shining light that warmed so many people around her.
Carol was born on April 25, 1944 to Edwin and Arlene Scheuerman in Rochester, New York, and eventually the family settled down in Pasadena, California where she graduated from Pasadena High School in 1962. Even though her sister Janet had some annoying habits as a child (chewing strawberry seeds loudly, talking in her own made-up language), the two grew up to be best friends, talking on the phone nearly every day. Her baby brother, Donald, also provided his fair share of family irritation (clogging the toilet with rocks) but also remained close to his sister, despite the distance. One of Carol's inarguable strengths was to maintain relationships, and she checked up on her cousins and many wide-scattered friends frequently over the years. We were always surprised at the acuity of her memories, remembering names and events that she weaved together into the tapestry of her life.
She and her husband Tom shared an enviably long marriage of almost 51 years. Tom literally fell into her lap in police dispatch at the Pasadena Police Department, and after a bit of cajoling, he managed to convince her to go on a date. They were married on September 13, 1972, in Pasadena, California. Their relationship was based on loyalty, love, and support for one another, with a good dose of bickering to keep things interesting. Through the chaos of their frequent moves, Carol was an expert at setting up a home and providing the consistency needed to thrive as a family.
Carol's two daughters, Lori and Nicole, were raised with tender concern and unconditional love. Their mom was never too busy to lend a listening ear to problems or just hear a reporting of the day. Talking with her about the happenings in their lives, both the good and the bad, lent an air of purpose that carried on into their adulthood with daily phone calls and frequent visits.
Carol loved her grandchildren with all of her heart. Despite the challenges of living far away, she always kept up with Ryan Scott Newman and Ashley Nicole Newman. Benjamin Thomas Herche and Elizabeth Carol Herche know her as Nana. They will miss their number one fan, as they could do no wrong in her eyes.
Carol leaves behind her husband, Tom, her children Lori (McRiley) Larriva and Nicole (Lusby) Herche, her siblings Janet (Al) DelGrande and Donald Scheuerman, and 4 grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held 11:00am Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, 1633 Waverley Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.
