Carmelia Grizmala Obituary

Carmelia Duponte Grizmala, 83, of Murrells Inlet, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday,

November 15th, 2025, after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1942, Carmelia was the daughter of the late Charles

W. Duponte and Carmelia Duponte. She was raised in New Bedford, where she developed

her lifelong appreciation for family, community, and the simple joys of coastal living. As a

child, she treasured her summers on Nantucket Island, a place that brought her endless

happiness and remained one of her fondest memories throughout her life.

Carmelia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Annnhurst College in Woodstock,

Connecticut, Class of 1964, an accomplishment she carried with pride.

For 60 years, she shared a beautiful and enduring marriage with her husband, Fredrick

Grizmala, a partnership defined by deep devotion, laughter, and unwavering companionship.

Carmelia was the cherished mother of two daughters: Jennifer Grizmala-Liu of Westfield, NJ,

and Julie Grizmala Curtice of North Reading, MA. She is also survived by her loving sons-in-

law, Victor Liu and Scott Curtice, who were dedicated and supportive members of her

family. She took immense pride in her three grandchildren — Aidan Liu, Melissa Liu, and Nathan

Curtice — who brought boundless joy into her life. Each of them carries a piece of their

grandmother’s warmth, kindness, and gentle strength.

Carmelia is further survived by her sister, Susan Conway of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and

her brother, Charles Henry Duponte of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, both of whom she held close to her heart.

Her family remembers her as a woman of quiet grace, compassion, and an unwavering

ability to make others feel loved and supported. Those who knew Carmelia will remember

her kind smile, her thoughtful nature, and the peaceful way she moved through the world.

Even as Alzheimer’s gradually dimmed her memory, her loving spirit never faded.

Her family will hold her close in their hearts forever and find comfort in memories that time cannot erase.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org
