Betty Jean Barcomb (Pate)

Betty Jean (Pate) Barcomb, 91, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026. She was born January 11, 1935, in Cloverport, KY, daughter of the late, Arthur Lewis Pate and Zelpha Pauline Pate.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, William J. Barcomb; and a brother, Harold W. Pate.

Betty Jean found great joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved traveling, gardening, birdwatching, preserving cherished memories through photo albums, taking scenic car rides, and spending time with her family, friends, and her beloved dog, Jasper. She was a former member of Belin United Methodist Church.

Betty Jean is lovingly survived by her sister, Donna Carol Dowell and her husband, Dale of Newburgh, IN; a daughter, Tammie L. Barcomb (Maureen O'Keefe) of Houston, Texas; nieces and nephews, Wayne Dowell (Susan), Newburgh, IN; Joseph Dowell (Hamona), Kamuela, HI; Patricia Yates (Peter), Scottsdale, AZ; Steve Dowell (Carla), Newburgh, IN; daughter-in-law, Patty Keily Barcomb of Manchester, Connecticut; her grandchildren, Jason Barcomb of Traverse City, Michigan, Ashley Barcomb of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Alan Barcomb, Jr. (Christine) of East Haven, Connecticut; her great-grandchildren, Shannon Barcomb of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Beatrix Batdorff of Traverse City, Michigan, and Matthew, Daniel, and Alyssa Barcomb of East Haven, Connecticut; and her great-great-grandchildren, Andrae Zymire Harris and Cashlee Jaynynn Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Betty Jean's memory to All 4 Paws Animal Rescue, 708 Petigru Drive, Pawleys Island, SC 29585 (www.all4pawssc.org), the Dementia Society of America (www.dementiasociety.org), or the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org)

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers, med techs, and nurses at Pegasus Landing of Tanglewood and Bayou City Hospice. Their kindness, dedication, and meaningful connections with Betty Jean brought her comfort and dignity, especially during her final weeks, for which her family will be forever grateful.

A visitation will be held from 2-3pm Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Hwy, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. At 3:00pm a collection of personal remembrances from family and friends will be held at the funeral home. Burial with a committal service will immediately follow at Belin United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4182 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
