Barry Thompson Obituary

Barry F. Thompson, 66, passed peacefully at his home on May 30, 2026 with his wife, Vicky and devoted Pittie Elle Belle by his side. Barry was born in Charlottesville VA and resided in Myrtle Beach SC until his passing.

Barry is preceded in death by his parents Wesley K and Audrey "Pete" Thompson of Charlottesville Va.

Barry is survived by his wife, Vicky Owen Thompson and his daughters Casey Owen, Lacy Bretz and her husband Carl, Robin Thompson, and Nancy Gregory and her husband Brent. His grandchildren Elijah Owen, V. Strange, Grayson Strange and Avery Thompson. Sister and Brother in laws Angie and Dennis Sheffer. Nephew Matthew Sheffer. Sisters Amy Thompson and Anita Thompson. Plus numerous cousins in Virginia.

Barry graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1978. Enlisted with the Air Force in 1978 and stationed in Ellsworth AF Base in South Dakota. He was a missile maintenance specialist.

After a 4 year stint in the Air Force Barry joined the Army in 1983. Stationed in Hawaii, and Germany, and then back home to the states. Promoted to Staff Sergeant, Barry was recognized as a leader among his men and a true hero. He received the Bronze Star Medal during "Operation Desert Storm" as Howitzer Section Chief, Battery A, 3d Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) from 17 Jan 1991 through 26 Mar 1991.

He is the recipient of a number of military awards. Among them are the Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Army Commendation Medal, five awards of the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (with three campaign stars) and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. Barry's last duty was to the Frankfort Army Recruiting Station in Kentucky. He retired Dec 1999 at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Barry enjoyed riding the back roads on his Harley with friends and family. Barry and Vicky often joined others on camping adventures in their RV. His best times were spent on the farm where he loved spending time on his tractor. He loved spending time play with his furry companions Max, Jesse Belle, and Beau. His most favorite times were spent fishing with Eli, teaching him life skills and being the best Papa.

The Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026, at 2 pm.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service. from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

A private burial in Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.
