Alberta Smith Obituary

Alberta Joan Smith, beloved by family and friends, passed away peacefully at the age of 86, surrounded by loved ones that she treasured so dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Theodore (Ted) Smith, and her parents, Julia and Thomas Walters. She is survived by her daughter Nicole and son-in-law, Eric Bankey of Weehawken, NJ, their children Evan and Julia; her daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Jason Tallant of La Jolla, CA, and son Griffin. She is also survived by her loving sisters-in-law Rita Smith, Derry Smith, and Claire Smith, and brother-in-law, Henry Smith.

Born and raised in Woodbridge, NJ, Alberta attended Woodbridge High School (class of 1957) before continuing her education at the Nursing School at Perth Amboy General Hospital. She enjoyed summers at the Jersey shore, where she met Ted.  They married in 1967, and soon after relocated to Hopkinton, New Hampshire, where she served as the assistant to the CEO of Blue Shield.  After several years, they moved to Colchester, VT, where they resided for 8 years. Alberta and Ted ultimately made Shelburne, VT, their home. There, they raised their daughters and enjoyed 31 years in the company of close-knit and supportive friends.

Her professional career included working as a medical secretary at the University of Vermont Medical Center (1983-1994) and as a Concierge at The Residence at Shelburne Bay (1995-2008). There, she brought joy and smiles to the many senior residents. She was the heart of the community and enthusiastically participated in its events and activities. Alberta found joy in hosting the residents at a yearly Garden Tea Party in her backyard.

Upon moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in 2009, Alberta reconnected with family and cultivated lasting friendships. Alberta became an active member of the Myrtle Beach Golf & Yacht Club’s Women’s Club and treasured her welcoming neighborhood, which brought so much enjoyment to her retirement years.

Alberta loved playing piano, gardening, reading, and decorating her homes. She took delight in gathering with friends and family for games, especially Rummikub, Bunco, and, of course, Bingo.  Alberta also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her close circle of friends on their many fun outings.

A devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother, Alberta found her greatest joy in the love of her family, especially in creating cherished memories with her three grandchildren. Her life was defined by quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. She supported family and friends with remarkable empathy, often through illness and hardship, with a gentle heart, always offering comfort, guidance, and warmth.

Alberta will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her and were touched by her generous spirit.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 10th at 1:00 PM at the Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club located at 6851 King Arthur Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588.
