Warren Gehman Umstead, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully Wednesday January 8, 2020 at his Pawleys Island residence surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Lansdale, PA, Mr. Umstead was the son of the late Warren G. Umstead, Sr. and Florence V. Umstead.

He retired from the DuPont Company where he was an International Major Account Manager. During his time with DuPont he traveled the U.S. and extensively in Europe.

Mr. Umstead graduated from Lansdale High School in 1950 in the upper quintile of the class. He was a member of both the concert and marching band and The Bux-Mont Honor Band his senior year.

At Temple University he continued his music ambition and was a member of the Temple University concert and marching band as well as being a member of the Temple Honor Society and the Mid Atlantic Honor Band. Mr. Umstead graduated from Temple University in the early 1950’s and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Alabama. He went on to receive his MBA from Webster University and a PhD from California Coast University and was an active Master Mason, Scottish Rite Consistory and Shrine member.

Since moving to South Carolina Mr. Umstead continued his interest in music and the performing arts. He was a member of the Coastal Concert Association as well as having served on the Board of the Georgetown Strand Theater – Home of the Swamp Fox Players where he performed on stage many times. He was an active member of All Saints Church and a tour guide at Brookgreen Gardens for 25 years.

Mr. Umstead is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; children, Cindy (Ron) Jolly and Scott Umstead; grandchildren, Casey (Will) Harvey of Nashville, TN; Emily (Andrew) Lee of Mt. Pleasant, SC; brother, Herbert E. Umstead and 6 great grand children.

A Celebration of Life service was held Monday January 13, 2020 at All Saints Church in Pawleys Island.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in Mr. Umstead’s name to All Saints Church, 3560 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585 or to Brookgreen Gardens, 1931 Brookgreen Garden Drive, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
