Obituary

Martha Jean Harris Simril, 74, of Little River, SC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Compass Post Acute Rehabilitation in Conway, SC.

Born on November 25, 1943 in Hickory, NC, Martha was the daughter of the late William Jackson “W.J.” Harris of Indian Land, SC and Annie Frances Talent Harris of Landrum, SC. She was also preceded in death by her son, Mark (“Marc”) DavisSimril, on May 8, 2013, and Marc’s father, Dave Simril.

Martha grew up in Rock Hill, SC where she and her family were members of Friendship United Methodist Church. She graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1961. Martha lived most of her adult life along the east coast, primarily in south Florida, where she enjoyed fishing, snorkeling, and skiing. She spent the last 14 years of her retirement in Little River, SC.

Martha was a professional seamstress and operated her own business, Martha’s Alterations, for many years in Lake Park, Florida. Her sewing talents began at an early age, and by high school she was making all of her own clothing. She won a blue ribbon from Singer Sewing Company and also a 4-H award for her sewing achievements.

Martha had a very strong personality and enjoyed living life in her own unique way. In her younger days, she never met a stranger. Her health began to decline in the last few months of her life after her doctors discovered a large mass on her left lung. She refused treatment, however, and embraced death with a peaceful acceptance. Martha died on her mother’s birthday.

The family would like to thank the staff, doctors and nurses at Compass Post Acute Rehabilitation, and at Amedisys Hospice of Myrtle Beach, for the loving care given to Ms. Simril in her final weeks and days of life.

Martha is survived by her brother, Billy Jackson Harris and his wife Barbara McSwain Harris, both of whom grew up in Rock Hill and are graduates of Rock Hill High School, and currently reside in Muskegon, Michigan; her sister, Judy Browder, who also grew up in Rock Hill and graduated from RHHS, and husband Bill, who reside in Brunswick, GA; her niece, Teresa Harris Dark of Alpharetta, GA and formerly of Rock Hill, SC; niece Marie Harris Smith and husband Bryant of West Palm Beach, FL; a nephew, Brian Jackson Harris of Hermosa Beach, CA; and two great-nephews, Harrison Chase Smith and Hunter Jackson Smith of West Palm Beach, FL.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Thursday, July 19, 2018 from 3 3 pm – 5 pm at the Olive Garden, 519 John Ross Pkwy (at Dave Lyle Blvd), Rock Hill, SC.

In lieu of flowers a memorial donations in Martha’s name may be made to a hospice of your choice.
