John De Madaris, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. He was born on May 18, 1923 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late John Sr. and Sally Maybell Gunter Madaris.
Along with his parents, John is preceded by his beloved wife of 73 years, Jane Ellen Goodwin Madaris; and their sons, Roger and Rodney Madaris in addition to brothers Charles, Robert (Marion) and Sister Francelle. In addition he was extreamly close to and preceded Janes brothers and sisters James (Homer) Philip, William and sisters Mary Ann and Camella.
Left to honor John’s memory are his children, John C. Madaris and his wife Mary of Virginia, Jeffery Douglas Madaris and his wife Barbara of South Carolina, Sharon Madaris-Riley of South Carolina, and Nancy McMillian of Florida; grandchildren, Arthur, Johnny, Lanny, Kim, Krista, Cindy, Michele, Jennifer, Donnie, Wesley, Stephen, Robin, Valarie, Karen and Dana; many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a large extended family that includes the last family member of his generation brother-in law Robert S. Goodwin (Uncle Bobby).
John De moved to Virgina when he was 11 years old from South Carolina, graduated from G.W High School in Alexandria where upon graduation he worked for a short time at the Naval Torpedo factory before joining the US Navy during WW II. His primary job was to design and test new torpedo's for the Navy and was discharged as a Torpedo-man 2nd Class in 1946. Upon his discharge he worked briefly at a steel mill in Baltimore prior to joining U.S. Recording company in Washington, DC as an electronics technician. He then completed study at GW University in Washington DC to achieve his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering. His primary work and love was research and development of sound and acoustic instruments for the recording industry as well as the FBI and the military. Later he worked for private contractors designing fiber optic and acoustical equipment for the military.
A Celebration of John’s life will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date in Virginia.
