James E. Roberts, age 81, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 6, 2017 at his Pawleys Island residence with his loving wife Marilyn by his side.

Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest child of James and Arline Roberts.

Jim and Marilyn met at Knox College and married on September 8, 1956. Following graduation Jim attended graduate school at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and the Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary. He entered military service in the US Army Corps of Engineers Reserves and then went on active duty as a Chaplain in 1966. He volunteered to serve in Vietnam and was stationed in Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Korea, Panama and New York. He retired in Fairfax, Virginia and pursued his many hobbies including running marathons, bridge, home renovations, sports refereeing, travel, and his dogs.

Jim and Marilyn have four children, Paula Carter, Peter Roberts, Kate Harmon and Michael Roberts, and nine grandchildren, Nick and Laura Truglio, Caroline, Lauren and Allison Harmon, Andrew, Tommy, Lena and Nicole Roberts and one more grandson is due in June 2017. He is preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Marilyn Roberts, Susan Pavlik and Jean Tranchita.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Burroughs Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 2:00 PM for one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery with day and time to be announced.

Many thanks to the family, friends and caregivers who have supported Jim and Marilyn through his long illness. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Mercy Care of Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 8216 Devon Ct, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.
