Elliott Edward Dodson, 93, of Pawleys Island, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 5, 1923 in Norfolk, VA, Elliott was the son of the late Elliott Edward Dodson, Sr. and Caroline Field Dodson. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his first wife, Marie Elizabeth McGill Dodson and his sister, Susan Dodson Rogers.

Elliott moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 1927 and entered into the ERC (Enlisted Reserve Corps) on October 1, 1942 while attending Clemson. During Elliott's junior year he was placed into active duty in 1943 and completed basic training at Camp Croft, SC. In 1944 he was sent to Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA. Following graduation from OCS, Elliott was assigned to the 42nd (Rainbow) Infantry Division at Camp Gruber, OK on October 27, 1944. His service in the 42nd was with Company M, 222nd Infantry Regiment as an 81mm mortar section leader. Elliott served in active reserve until 1964 with duty in several units, principally as company commander of Headquarters Company 492nd Engineer Battalion and subsequently transferred as Major to retired reserve. Following his WWII service he received a B.S. Degree from Clemson University in Mechanical Engineering and went to work with Westinghouse Electric Corporation. In 1956 he received his Masters Degree from Penn State University remaining there to teach in the Mechanical Engineering Department until 1964 then served as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

A faithful member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. Elliott enjoyed helping with the Tara Hall Home for Boys and the Prison Ministry in Georgetown.

Elliott loved his church, his family, the beach and especially golfing with the Tradition Men's League.

Survivors include his loving wife of 16 years, Darlene Dodson; daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Clark and her husband Jesse Clark of Hyattsville, MD; sons, Charles Dodson of Boston, MA; Fred Dodson of Charlottesville, VA; stepdaughters, Beckey Cook of Falling Waters, WV; Shelley Newton and her husband John Newton of Pasadena, MD; stepson, Dain Hungelmann of Juneau, AK; granddaughter, Claire Elliott Dodson.

A Celebration of Life service with military honors will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, March 17, 2017 at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mark Diehl and Rev. Frank Holsclaw officiating. Inurnment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
